How to make a scene in a story scary?

I've heard/read somewhere that if the writer is freaked out by the scene, then it is truly frightening. If this is the case, I write pretty tame stories. If I wanted to write a nightmarish kind of scene, what techniques would I employ to make my readers get the goosebumps? I really am clueless. thanks.
